    Description

A full figured standing cat in red jacket with yellow bow tie, the base has an applied brass plaque that reads "DR. GEO M GRAY Compliments of Katz Drug Store. VIC. 8208- 9 - 10". These unusual desk pieces were usually given out to Doctors and other Katz Drug Store business contacts.
    Dr. GEO M. GRAY . Measures 7 x 4.25 x 4 inches.
When the United States entered World War I in 1917, the Katz Drug Stores became famous in Kansas City by hiring a pharmacist that allowed them to stay open past 6pm due to wartime curfews on nonessential businesses, and absorbing a new 10 percent tax on cigarettes rather than raising the price for their customers.
Katz Drug Stores or Katz Drugstores established by Polish natives Isaac Katz (1879-1956), or Ike Katz, and his brother Michael Katz, or Mike Katz (dying in 1969). Business started as a fruit stand near Union Depot in the 1890s before changing into a confectionery (and general store) and moving in 1914 to 12th and McGee Streets with an additional store at 8th and Grand Avenues. Becoming a drugstore during World War I due to a city law on business hours and becoming known for its catchy advertising slogans and cut-rate prices, etc.
