the gauge will measure voltage across a ground and a positive wire

How to test a Voltage gauge
The process for testing the gauge is as follows: Check power to the gauge by switching your DMM to the appropriate DC voltage range and connecting the leads to the V+ and ground terminals of the gauge. When the ignition is switched on, you should see 12 volts (or 24 volts).
