    Description

This vintage ceramic cup-shaped mortar and pestle set is a product of the Griffith Pottery House, a company founded by A. James Griffith, Jr. in Germantown, PA, in 1944.  The company was moved in 1951 to its present location in Oreland, PA.  The mortar measures approximately 3” in height and 3 ½” in width and the pestle is approximately 4 ¼” in length.  Both pieces are off-white with gold trim around the rim and base of the mortar.  Bold black letters, “SK&F”, are displayed across the front of the cup.  The gold company backstamp is located on the base of the mortar.  Despite overall crazing, some manufacturing flaws and a little discoloration on the interior, the mortar is in very good condition with no chips, cracks or any other evidence of damage.  The pestle has overall crazing and for some reason a whole in the bottom.  In spite of these few imperfections, this is a handsome mortar and pestle set.
