Six (6) approx. 21.25" x 17.5" lithographed prints. This set is of 6 prints from 1951-original prints from Parke-Davis's "History of Pharmacy in Pictures". From original Paintings by Robert Thom. Parke-Davis & Co. originally issued these prints in small sets beginning in the 1950s. They were issued as part of a continuing series of pictures. This series contained 40 or 50 prints by the end of the production of the series. All of the original paintings in this series were by Robert A. Thom. Parke-Davis commissioned artist Robert Thom to produce 40 illustrations for the series, “A History of Pharmacy in Pictures.” Each print came with a history article that explained the depicted scene and its place in history. (NOT INCLUDED IN THIS SALE) The series was developed in cooperation with the Institute for the History of Pharmacy at the University of Wisconsin. Druggists were encouraged to display the artwork in their stores. The series depicted such early topics as scientist Galen in the second century to later developments such as chemotherapy, antibiotics and pharmaceutical research. (This set is the beginning of the series) Parke Davis also commissioned Thom to paint a series of illustrations on the history of medicine. Thom (1915-1979) was well known as an illustrator of historical subjects, including great moments in baseball and the history of Illinois and Michigan.
Condition:
All of these prints are used, and have heavy wear. Several have old water stains, and may have tears along the edges from the paper becoming brittle and fragile. The "Before the Dawn of History" print is the worse, with a large tear on the top and on the right side, going from the edge towards the illustrated print area. They do NOT intrude into the print, but the paper is fragile and if not handled carefully, they may extend further.Would need to have a mat or cut down to a smaller frame to avoid the existing tears.VERY heavy age darkening, these were on the walls of a pharmacy and then stored in broken frames. Fair to Acceptable condition. PLEASE SEE ALL PHOTOS. The item's color as depicted in this listing should only be used as a guide, as your monitor may show the colors differently. Vintage items are not perfect.
